As winter approaches, the humanitarian challenges faced by displaced families in the Gaza Strip become increasingly urgent. The displaced population in Gaza faces severe weather conditions in already fragile living environments. Families endure the constant threat of stormwater floods, insufficient shelter from rain and wind, putting their health, safety, and dignity at risk.

Through the HAYA Joint Programme, UN-Habitat has provided winterization support to approximately 40,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Gaza Strip. This initiative has enhanced protection against stormwater floods by implementing retaining barriers, constructing entrances and stairs, and installing wooden walkways in targeted displacement sites.

Additionally, two shelter sites—home to 160 displaced Palestinian families (948 individuals, including 237 women and 478 children)—received critical assistance. To reinforce their makeshift tents, plastic sheets were distributed and installed to cover the top and sides, preventing water leakage, wind intrusion, and cold exposure.

In conclusion, winterization efforts for internally displaced persons are critical in providing displaced families with the protection they need as winter approaches in Gaza. UN-Habitat remains committed to providing relief and improving living conditions for those most in need. By combining innovative designs, utilization of the limited resources and thoughtful interventions, these efforts are not only addressing immediate needs but also helping help build resilience among the displaced Palestinian families in Gaza as they navigate the harsh realities of winter.
