As Africa faces increasing challenges due to forced displacement and migration, the upcoming Africa Urban Forum on September 6th, 2024, will bring together experts and government officials to discuss solutions for creating more resilient African cities. The session will focus on sustainable approaches to addressing the growing trend of urban displacement, particularly in the Sahel and Horn of Africa.
With over 30 million people in Africa affected by conflict, violence and other crises, cities have become critical hubs for displaced populations. More than 60% of refugees and nearly half of internally displaced persons (IDPs) now reside in urban areas. This trend has underscored the need for cities to adopt innovative strategies to provide safe, inclusive environments for these vulnerable communities.
The Africa Urban Forum will feature two panel discussions, including delegates from Ethiopia, Mauritania and Somalia, as well as representatives from UN-Habitat, the World Bank, UNHCR and Cities Alliance. The first panel will explore the impact of migration and displacement on African cities, while the second will examine how national and local governments are transitioning their commitments into actionable solutions.
By fostering collaboration between key stakeholders, this session aims to drive forward the conversation on integrating migration and displacement challenges into urban development planning. The outcomes from these discussions will help shape future strategies for strengthening the resilience of African cities in the face of ongoing and future crises.
